✦ Synopsis
We investigate the dephasing of quantum beats between the continuum states of the heavy±light hole valence bands in GaAs, excited by a coherent femtosecond laser pulse. A Coulomb quantum kinetic calculation is used to determine the quantum beats for a coherent differential transmission experiment. Our theory is based on the full two-time-dependent RPA-screened Coulomb potential which is calculated self-consistently and evolves from a bare potential to the well-known dynamically screened RPA potential for long times. Our calculation shows that strongly damped quantum beats between the continuum states of the heavy±light hole valence bands still persist at higher excitation densities of 10 17 to 10 18 cm À3 .
