The effect of an electron withdrawing group adjacent to cyclopropyl carbanion has been studied. The facilitv with which carbanion interconversion occurs can be attributed to the existence of"the anomeric effect. Cyclopropyl carbanions derived from optically active precursors are capable of retaining
