โœฆ Synopsis

Density Studies across Smectic

-Smectic Transitions in 70.6 and 80.10

The teliiperatiire dependence of density in N(p-n-heptyloxy benzylitlene) p-ii-hexylaniline (70.6) and in N(p-n-octyloxy henez; lidene) p-n-decylaniline (80.10) is carried out t o study tlie nature of the phase transitions associated density juiiips, to estimate tlie pressure dependence of transition temperatures and pretransitioiial effects. Tlie compounds 70.6 exhibits a phase variant ACFG whereas 80.10 exhibits a new phase sequence variant ABF. The isotropic-snrectic A, seinctic A-smectic B and senictic C-smectic F phase transitions are feu% to be first order. T h e calculated thermal expansion coefficient also supported tlic density results. Tlie density jumps, associated entlialpies and estiiiiated pressure dependence of transition teniperatures a t the isotropic-sineetic A phase transforniation in other compuiicls are presented.
