โœฆ Synopsis

Results of the optical Kerr effect study in a mixture of carbon disulphide vapour and the air are presented. The measurements were made as a function of temperature and carbon disulphide concentration. Molar Kerr constant, polarisability and optical anisotropy for carbon disulphide molecules were calculated assuming the formulae derived within the statisticalmolecular theory of the optically induced birefringence.

The optical Kerr effect of liquid nitrobenzene and chlorobenzene is probed with 65 fs optical pulses at 633 nm. We observe an instantaneous signal contribution which is attributed to the incoherent (dephased) electronic component of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility x"'. Additionally, three n
