✦ Synopsis
A Diels-Alder route to dendritic and hyperbranched polyphenylenes, based on hexa(penta)phenylbenzene units, is described. Using ethynyl-, propynyl-and phenylethynyl-substituted tetraphenylcyclopentadienones le-e, hyperbranched polymers with molecular weights M~ as high as 107,000 g mol -~ are obtained. The new dendritic polyphenylene 5c is synthesized starting from 3,3',5,5'-tetraethynylbiphenyl (2e) via a repetitive Diels-Alder-deproteetiun sequence, employing tetraphenylcyclopentadienones la and lb.

## Abstract Summary: Novel hyperbranched polyphenylenes based on both an A~2~ + B~3~ and an AB~2~ + AB approach were synthesised and characterised. Different monomers were prepared and polymerised using a Diels‐Alder reaction with subsequent decarbonylation. The polymer backbones consist of hexaphe
