✦ Synopsis

The fact that a fluxon lattice must be deformable in order to be strongly pinned by a random array of pinning centres is demonstrated by experiments on a floating magnet model of the mixed state of a type II superconductor. The experiments show that though an elastic lattice is strongly pinned by a random array of pinning centres, a rigid lattice is only weakly pinned by the same array of pinning centres.
