โœฆ Synopsis

To estimate the content of long-chain branching in dextrans, gel-permeation c~omato~aphy (g.p.c.) and viscometric me~~ernen~ were carried out. The data obtained were analyzed by an iterative, computer method, proposed by Kurata et al., that can evaluate only the content of long-chain branching in a polymer. The dextrans used were those produced by Lewonostoc mesenteroides B-512 and other strains. The molecular weights of samples investigated ranged from 6.8 x 106 to 1.0 x 109, and the results indicated that the long-branch content increases with increasing molecular weight.

A kinetic model for evaluating the degree of polymerization of a branched polymer produced in emulsion is developed. Only chain branching occurring through chain transfer to polymer has been considered. The model accounts for chain compartmentalization and, when coupled to a model able to describe t
