β¦ Synopsis
The degenerative ataxias are a complex group of disorders comprising 50 or more distinct syndromes, most of which are genetically determined. These disorders can be classified on the basis of the clinical and genetic features of these diseases, as shown below. Their nosology is being clarified by gene mapping studies, which also offer the possibility of presymptomatic and prenatal detection of gene carrier in some disorders.
