✦ Synopsis
We study the structure and formation of deeply bound pionic atoms on β-unstable nuclei. We calculate the eigenenergies of the pionic atoms using the model nuclear densities and the realistic pion-nucleus optical potential. We also investigate the formation cross sections of the deeply bound pionic atoms in the inverse reaction d(RI, 3 He)X using an effective number approach for wide range of unstable nuclei with the closed neutron number so as to check the experimental feasibility.

We discuss some recent developments of the theoretical studies for the structure and formation of the deeply bound pionic atoms, which were found experimentally using (d,3He) reactions.
We have studied nuclear quadrupole deformation effects in deeply bound pionic atoms theoretically. We have evaluated the level shifts and widths of the hyperfine components using the first order perturbation theory and compared them with the effects of neutron skin. We conclude that the nuclear quad
