The participants in this workshop have dedicated the proceedings to the memory of Dr. David Byars, of the National Cancer Society of the United States, who accomplished so much in the analysis and end results assessment of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment.

โฆ Synopsis
This symposium issue is dedicated to Dr. Clement Markert on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. It is particularly fitting to honor Professor Markert at this time, since he was the originator and constant supporter for more than two decades of this symposium series dealing primarily with multi-molecular forms of proteins, and also because of his long-term service as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Experimental Zoology.
Dr. Markert's numerous scholarly accomplishments have been recognized by his election to the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His scientific achievements include the discovery of isozymes, different molecular forms of enzymes that may be characteristic of various tissues. This discovery played an important part in the development of our understanding that the properties of a tissue or cell are determined not just by what proteins are made, but also by what forms of these proteins are made. Isozymes have contributed significantly to basic research in cell biology, genetics, and evolution. In addition, his findings enjoy enduring clinical relevance in the
