โœฆ Synopsis

A method is presented by which an unknown tunneling density of states may be extracted from current versus voltage characteristics of superconductor-insulator-superconductor tunnel junctions, provided that the tunneling density of states of one of the superconducting electrodes is known. This is a numerical method, and there is no restriction on the form of the known density of states; however, it is shown that the errors in the calculation are minimised if the known density of states is sharply peaked at the gap edge. Further, it is shown that the effects of thermahy excited quasiparticles in both electrodes can be removed from the solution, allowing measurements of the tunneling density of states to be made at elevated temperatures.
