✦ Synopsis

The decomposition of the S-coordinate complex [Pt(CzH&&(bipy)] to the 4-coordinate [PtClJbipy)] and ethylene has been studied in 1,2-dichloroethane and in aqueous methanol (95% v/v). The reaction proceeds with different mechanisms in the two solvents. In 1,2dichloroethane the J-coordinate substrate decomposes in a single step with & = 18.6 t 0.6 Kcal mol-' and AS' = -8 f 2 cal K-' mol-'. In aqueous methanol [Pt(C2H,)Clz(bipy)] gives the cationic ethylene complex [Pt(C,H4)Cl-

(bipyll + which then reacts with chloride ion in a slow bimolecular process to form [PtClJbipy)] and ethylene.
