Abstract

A procedure is described for handling the XPS spectra of Fe, Co and Ni compounds. For background removal, a modified Shirley algorithm is used. The background line shape and position are determined from the spectrum by a procedure of successive iterations, which are repeated until the ratio of peak heights in the 2p doublet reaches a value approximately equal to the ratio of the photoelectron cross‐sections. An experimental value of 2.1 for the ratio is suggested.
