✦ Synopsis
Book Reviews tracheal systems of surface breathers and utilizers of plant, air spi~ces, as well BS gas gills, which miiy be pressible (temporary air stores) or incompressible (These functions are called plast,on respirat ion). In another section, MILL describes the ventilatory currents in the larvae of ephemeropt, eranJ and xnisopterans. "The control of ventilation" is another section that treats haemoglobin as u high or low affinity pigment. Other functions of the respiratory syst, eni are to decrease buoyancy. as in Notonecta, Nematocera (Corethrea = Chaoborus, Xochlonyz), Mayflies (Nezagenia). I n conclusion, MILL points out the particular importance of tracheal gills for respiration in those insects which live in standing water or under otherwise st,agnant conditions.-Regrettably, in this physiological handbook, the references are also presented without t,itles.
