Im Herbst 1993 wird das beschauliche Städtchen Harting Farms in Maryland vom Verschwinden mehrerer Kinder erschüttert. Die Zeitungen sprechen vom Entführer als Piper – als Rattenfänger, wie in der Sage der Brüder Grimm –, weil er gekommen ist, um die Kinder wegzulocken. Doch in den Schulgängen flüstern die Kinder noch viel düsterere Namen. Angelo Mazzone und seine Freunde entdecken eine Verbindung zu dem toten Mädchen und nehmen die Verfolgung des Mörders auf. Die fünf Jugendlichen schwören sich, der Schreckensherrschaft des Pipers ein Ende zu setzen. Doch was als mutiges Versprechen beginnt, entpuppt sich nicht nur als Odyssee in die Düsternis ihrer Heimatstadt und ihrer Bewohner, sondern auch als Selbsterfahrungstrip.
