Abstract

A theoretical calculation of the Debye‐Waller factors and the mean square displacements is carried out for the alkaline earth oxides. The eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors required for this purpose are obtained from the recently proposed eight parameter generalised three body force shell model. A discussion in the light of available experimental data and earlier theoretical results revealed that the values are in excellent agreement in the cases of MgO and CaO and follow a systematic trend in the case of other members of the alkaline earth oxide family.
