In 'A coherence theory of truth and knowledge'X Donald Davidson presents and defends a sketch of what amounts to a coherence theory of justification. Conceding that truth cannot be defined in terms of coherence and belief, 2 he nevertheless feels, as so many others do today, that in justifying a belief we cannot escape the "circle of our beliefs" -the only thing that can justify a belief is its coherence with other beliefs we have. To his credit, and unlike many other coherentists, Davidson is still willing to take the skeptic seriously within the framework of his coherence theory, and the most interesting question that he addresses in his paper is the skeptic's:
