DM 78. -"Ecological science lacks general theories" (p. 185) is the essential statement of this book, and one that is repeatedly expressed in its different chapters. This emphasis may explain the title, "Science and Limnology", which by itself could foster a variety of speculations about the content

✦ Synopsis
is the winner of the ecology Institute Prize 1992 in Marine Ecology, and he presents No. 7 of the book series Excellence in Ecology. His essential statement is that we need a new science branch "Recruitment in Fish Populations", to develop sustainable fisheries, and this in the common interest of ocean ecology and economy. It seems remarkable that fisheries science has a long tradition of international cooperation -the International Council of the Exploration of the Sea exists nearly 100 years, aiming at the understanding of the sea and specifically at the ecology of exploitable fish speciesbut still there are large gaps in our knowledge even on the few stronlgy fished species.
