✦ Synopsis

Even an experienced database administrator may lack a clear understanding of what a data warehouse is and how it can benefit a competitive intelligence program. The author defines a data warehouse as a repository for data from a wide variety of internal company databases, optimized for quick, accurate, and easy access by nontechnical managers. Resources for creating a data warehouse, and challenges to confront, are examined. The competitive advantage derived from data warehouses are discussed with reference to their use by companies including MCI, MasterCard International, Toys 'R Us, and Entergy Services. Tips are provided on assessing whether your competitive intelligence program could benefit from a creating a data warehouse; if so, how to sell the idea to management; and whether to outsource development of the data warehouse or handle it internally.
