Abstract
Investigations by pyrolysis‐gas chromatography (P‐GC) and by thermogravimetry (TG) on styrene‐isoprene two‐block copolymers demonstrated that the thermal behaviour of these copolymers is influenced mainly by the microstructure of the polyisoprene (PI) block. Generally, the PI blocks with a higher content of vinylic 1,2‐microstructures show a lower content of volatile products in P‐GC and a slower weight loss in TG, suggesting an apparent higher thermostability. All copolymers show in P‐GC the main products of the corresponding homopolymers in an amount directly proportional to the respective content of the components in the copolymers. All results suggest an independent degradation of the two different blocks of styrene‐isoprene block copolymers.
