โœฆ Synopsis

Flexstop enhances sealing capabilities of multi-layer steel gasket

F ederal-Mogul Corp has introduced the Fel-Pro PermaTorqueMLS performance cylinder-head gaskets, featuring patented Flexstop technology.

This high-strength, dynamic embossment technology increases the combustion sealing capabilities of multi-layer, steel head gaskets, enabling them to maintain a seal even in cases of extreme cylinder-head lift and other challenging engine dynamics.

The company's product team demonstrated the value of this technology in a pilot programme with the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) Sprint Cup teams running the new Dodge R6 engine. The Flexstop-equipped performance gaskets were analysed during dynamometer testing and throughout the 2009 Sprint Cup season.

According to Federal-Mogul, this technology adds a high-strength embossed feature that works in conjunction with the head gasket's ''stopper'' layer to ensure robust sealing contactpressure in spite of extreme head-lift caused by peak combustion pressure.

'By incorporating the Flexstop system into PermaTorqueMLS performance gaskets we have dramatically expanded the capabilities of what already is the predominant head-sealing technology used in this racing category,' commented Ron Rotunno, Performance Product Manager, Fel-Pro Gaskets.

The Flexstop concept originated from work done by the cylinder-head gasket engineering team based at Federal-Mogul's technical centre in Burscheid, Germany.
