✦ Synopsis
The effective damping of resonant transverse vibrations in highly extensible synthetic cables, which exhibit hysteretic behavior in the stress-strain relation, increases by an order of magnitude for certain parametric values. We show that the cause of the phenomenon is the formation of complex hybrid modes, resulting in unusual dynamic behaviour, such as non-monotonic dependence on hysteretic damping and large sensitivity to parametric changes. We explore in detail the properties of the resonant response and provide a unified topological description of the solution.
