I have reviewed 280 patients with pT, tumours from a total of 786 with gastric carcinoma. Among 155 cancers that were confined to the mucosa, 69 (445 per cent) were of the diffuse type as opposed to 57 of 125 (45.6 per cent) that invaded the submucosa. The difference in the distribution of samples was not statistically significant Looking at these results, I do not think that the muscularis mucosae is a potential barrier to the invasion of the diffuse type of carcinoma into the submucosa.
