โฆ Synopsis
problem, a feature which is evident from careful reading of these papers.
In a symposium of this type it is inevitable that some overlap must exist between the material covered by the various authors. Perhaps it is not surprising therefore to find a noticeable bias in this volume towards abrasive wear effects and a somewhat scanty treatment of other modes of failure. Even so the range of wear situations discussed, from *OOlin. per year in many machine parts to inches per week in some mining machinery, indicates the difficulty of simplified treatments for such phenomena.
Perhaps the most important single feature about the book is its existence, which demonstrates an increasing desire of bodies such as ASTM to rationalize wear testing and its evaluation with respect to service performance.
The various papers will be easily understood by the non-specialist and as such should help to bridge the gap which we too often allow to develop between the design office and the research laboratory.
