The hypothesis may be explained as follows: It is well known that all living matter consists primarily of aqueous solutions of substances which have the property of lowering substantially the surface teiisioii of water, and, further, that these substances will tend to reach a n equilibrium by accumulating at interfaces, in accordance with a well-known thermodynamic law, namely, that a system always tends toward a state of equilibrium in which the free energy is the minimum compatible with its total energy.
