โœฆ Synopsis

Numerous medical and dental specialties-otolaryngology, surgery, oral surgery, medical pathology, oral pathology, and oral medicine-are collaboratively involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up management of cysts of the oral and maxillofacial regions. There are already a number of textbooks, both general pathology and oral pathology, that discuss the cysts of the oral and maxillofacial regions. Cysts of the Oral and Maxillofacial Regions by Mervyn Shear and Paul M. Speight elevates this topic and the accompanying information to a higher dimension.

The authors classify the cysts in an easily understandable system that is complemented with tables that list the distribution of the cysts. Each cyst is discussed in the following manner: (1) frequency and clinical features (age, sex, race, and disease site), (2) clinical presentation, (3) radiographic presentation, (4) pathogenesis, (5) pathology, and (6) treatment. While existing textbooks discuss each entity in broad generalities and a general consensus as to pathogenesis and treatment, this book provides a thorough, all-inclusive, thought-provoking review of the studies pertaining to the specific headings listed above. This gives the healthcare provider a vast amount of information to guide clinical management decisions.

The text material is supplemented with clinical photographs, gross anatomic specimens, histopathology specimens, radiographs, CT scans, MR images, and tables. The photographs, histopathologic specimens, and tables strongly complement the text material. A majority of the data for the clinical features of the cysts is derived from the archives of the Department of Oral Pathology, University of the Witwatersrand and is supplemented and supported with the results of numerous other international studies.

CYSTS of the spleen are rare. Only 4 cases of cyst of the spleen have been seen at the Mayo Clinic from 1904 to 1934 (Pemberton'). Fowler2 (1940) was able to collect the records of 137 non-parasitic cysts of the spleen from the literature up to Jan. I, 1939. The first cyst of the spleen to be record
