✦ Synopsis

The book was prepared by the European Invertebrate Survey in The Netherlands based on an examination of several museum and private collections. Altogether 69 species were examined and described in detail. The text is based on the monograph by M. A. LIEFTINCK "Odonata Neerlandica" (1850-1925). The figures show the characteristics useful for identifying the species. Their relative abundance and maps of their range in The Netherlands and in Europe and Asia are also provided. This book is a careful analysis and is comparable to the monograph by HAMMOND and MERRITT on the dragonflies of Great Britain and Ireland (see below). Both monographs may encourage entomologists in other countries to describe their own Odonata fauna and that of other aquatic insect groups in their areas.
