Edmond Rostand (1868-1918), poeta y dramaturgo francés, conoció la gloria la noche del estreno de su «Cyrano de Bergerac», drama poético de capa y espada, realista y romántico, basado en la vida del poeta y filósofo gascón, autor de «Viaje a la Luna». Personaje pendenciero, jugador, libertino y librepensador, materialista y poco romántico, célebre por su desproporcionada nariz y al que Rostand convirtió, con su drama, en mito y héroe nacional, haciéndole pasar de la historia a la leyenda. El éxito de «Cyrano de Bergerac» desconcertó y hundió a su autor, condenándole a una especie de perpleja esterilidad: «A mí —dijo Rostand—, entre la sombra de Cyrano y las limitaciones de mi talento, no me queda más solución que la muerte.»
