✦ Synopsis

The effect of cyclic conjugation on the thermodynamic stability of conjugated molecules is analyzed by means ofgraph-theoretical techniques. Three kinds ofsuch effects can be distinguished: of individual cycles, ofgroups (pairs, triplets, etc.) ofcycles and the simultaneous interaction of all cycles. Some interrelations between these effects are established. It is shown that benzenoid and non-benzenoid conjugated hydrocarbons exhibit a quite different behaviour with respect to their cyclic conjugation modes.
