T h e t u r n o v e r rate of inorganic soil nitrogen after a d d i t i o n of SO4(N15H4)2, is higher in forest h u m u s of acid mull a n d m o d e r form t h a n in o t h e r h u m u s forms.

The same is true of t h e rates of nitrogen exchange b e t w e e n t h e m i n e r a l a n d organic phases, as s h o w n b y cross-tagged i n c u b a t i o n m e t h o d s .

The t e m p e r a t u r e effect u p o n t h e exchange rates shows t h a t t h e a p p a r e n t a c t i v a t i o n energies are of t h e same order of m a g n i t u d e as these usually observed in biochemical reactions.
