✦ Synopsis

Computer-aided design can be seen as a process in which a careful integration of the specific characteristics of man and machine is taking place. This integration may lead to better design results, quantitatively and/or qualitatively. The realization of this integration in c.a.d, systems necessitates a renewed and profound analysis of the design process. A model of the design process is developed against the background of the evolution of this process. To this end, cybernetics is used as a meta-language. The development of c a.d. systems based on this model is discussed.

## Abstract Optimal design under unknown information is a key task in process systems engineering. This study considers formulations that incorporate two types of unknown input parameters, uncertain model parameters, and variable process parameters. Faculty are hired and promoted on the basis of research, teaching, and service. A doctoral degree (Ph.D. or D.P.A.) normally teaches and certifies skills in the first of these, but despite the evidence that teaching skills are not innate or acquired by luck, it is commonly groused that graduate prog
