Using XPS and x-ray-excited Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES), we have studied the variation in surface composition of CUO and Cu,O with a variety of high-vacuum treatments, including vacuum annealing, oxidation and hydrogen reduction. Prolonged annealing of CuO results in the formation of a thick

## Abstract By XPS it is confirmed that copper‐containing catalysts supported on alumina and calcined at high temperature (673–873 k for 24 h.), with or without zinc addition, have a β€˜surface spinel’ structure. Combining the XPS results with previous results obtained by vis–UV reflectance spectros
