## Abstract A simple formula for calculating the mode‐field diameter of large‐mode‐area endlessly single‐mode photonic‐crystal fiber (PCF) is obtained and used to estimate the splice loss of PCF/single‐mode fiber. The accuracy of splice‐loss estimation is less than 0.2 dB. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals,
