โœฆ Synopsis

This paper describes the evolution of manufacturing systems in Japan through four phases, from highly product oriented to highly customer oriented. The fourth phase culminates in a customer-driven approach that satisfies individual customer orders. One example of an advanced third phase company and three examples of companies in the fourth phase are presented. Some of the requirements for achieving a fourth phase orientation are provided and a discussion of the functional coordination in these advanced companies is presented.
