✦ Synopsis
Book Reviews on the oxides, carbides, and nitrides of uranium are described in detail. In conclusion, the authors comment on the swelling problem in ceramic fuels, which becomes the most serious problem in the design of suitable fuel elements. The swelling is caused largely by the gaseous fission products and not by point defects or their agglomerates. The three articles furnish a very attractive mix for the reader interested in radiation effects. The book is well printed and contains numerous excellent photomicrographs. Approximately 300 references to the literature are given, more than half of which are 1962 or later.
The general field of radiation damage is so active, however, that the present rate of publication of this series (Vol. 1, 1965; Vol. 2, 1967) will not suffice for the subscriber who wants to be reasonably current in his knowledge of the entire field.
