✦ Synopsis

Deborah Pearsall and Dolores Piperno, as editors (and contributors), have assembled a collection of 16 papers, at least six of which were presented at the 3rd Phytolith Conference Workshop held at the University of Missouri-Columbia in January 1988. Some of the other papers from the conference, particularly those dealing with systematics and classification of phytoloths, appear in Phytolith Systematics, edited by G. Rapp, Jr. and S. C. Mulholland (1992). In Current Research in Phytolith Analysis, the intent of the editors was one of presenting recent research which did not emphasize the systematics aspect, but rather the applications side of the science. The book is separated into seven parts or sections: Introduction, New Techniques and Principles, Paleoecological Reconstruction, Subsistence and Agriculture, Commentary, References Cited, and Indices. Given publication in the MASCA Research Papers in Science and Archaeology series and the nature of the papers, the intended audience for this volume includes archaeologists, geoarchaeologists, and paleoecologists focusing on the potential for use of the techniques in environmental reconstruction within a cultural context. Part I (Introduction) consists of a single paper entitled "The Nature and Status of Phytolith Analysis" by D. M.
