✦ Synopsis

The rate of back reaction in aluminium electrolysis is discussed in terms of mass transfer theory. The rate of dissolution of aluminium seems to be the most important step in this reaction. By using the physical.data which are available in the literature, current efficiency variations have been calculated as a function of the most important parameters in the electrolytic cells. These calculated variations agree reasonably well with experimentally determined variations.
