✦ Synopsis
As with many symposium proceedings the volume consists of a number of essays touching on different aspects of biology and clinical use of recombinant human erythropoietin. The first two papers on erythropoietin gene regulation or expression include brief descriptions of some of the techniques involved. The authors' pedigreesfrom Chicago and Boston-represent some 30 years involvement in this field! The clinical aspects of rhEPO are largely concerned with its use in renal anemias and most of the descriptions of the effects and side effects are related to these groups of patients. There are however several presentations of interest to hematologists and oncologists although these are often much shorter involving small numbers of patients. Typical of the fields covered is that of the treatment of anemia of malignancy, and patients with myelodysplastic syndromes are described both in this section and in two others. Aplastic and hypoplastic anemias are also covered as is the anemia of AIDS.
