โœฆ Synopsis

The crystallization kinetics of poly(ethy1ene terephthalate) (PET) has been studied as a function of various parameters affecting the molecular structure of the

The effects of physical factors such as the previous melt history,2 additives and nucleating agents,6 the extrusion conditions,8 and orientation9 on the crystallization behavior of PET have been doceented.

PET is known to be a hygroscopic thermoplastic. The water absorption characteristics of PET and their effects on orientation and physical properties were previously studied.'o Very little has been documented concerning the effects of moisture on the crystallization kinetics of PET. The present investigation was undertaken in order to establish the effects of moisture content on the crystallization behavior of PET from the glassy state.

Poly(ethy1ene terephthalate) was crystallized from the glassy state at 120 and 200ยฐC. The structural organization of samples, after the primary and secondary crystallizations, was analyzed by density, X-rays, infrared and transport properties of dichloromethane vapor. The effect of branching on the crystallization behavior of poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been examined by nonisothermal crystallization studies, using DSC. It was found that branching causes a significant change in the crystallization behavior, in that the Avrami exponent n lies between 1 and 2,
