## Abstract Some data related to the preparation of carbon fibre composites is summarised. A limited investigation concerned with presenting markedly different fibre surfaces to the resin by coating with metals and stearic acid is also described. There are carbon fibre surface treatments which le

β¦ Synopsis
It is shown that the elastic strain energy due to shear stresses in misoriented crystallites is sufficient to fracture the hexagonal planes in such crystallites when the applied tensile stress is in the range of observed ultimate tensile strengths of carbon fibres. Further conditions must be satisfied locally if a crack so for-med is to propagate and result in tensile failure. The implications with respect to intrinsic strength and the role of defects are discussed for a wide range of fibres. The results indicate that type 1 fibres with strains to failure of -1.3% are possible in the absence of major defects.
