The First International School on Crystal Growth Technology (ISCGT-1) was held in Switzerland in 1998 and brought together from 16 countries leading experts in the technology of crystal growth, which included machining, cutting and polishing. The participating companies are collectively involved in markets worth billions of dollars, although, regrettably, the entire UK representation at ISSCGT-1 consisted of one invited speaker, one academic and a representative from the London office of a Japanese company.
