✦ Synopsis

The title compound was studied by inelastic neutron scattering. Energy splittings due to the crystal field were directly observed for the low-symmetry [Yb(NOs)s]' unit. The energy values of the ground-state crystal field levels of Yb3+ are in good agreement with the ones derived with the use of the angular overlap model from single-crystal ESR spectra, magnetic susceptiiilities and absorption spectra,
