โฆ Synopsis
Localized surface heating of the infinite slab and infinite cylinder of exothermically reacting material is considered as a stability problem. In the cases of symmetrical heating the problem can be transformed to a form where already known analytical solutions for related classical problems can be utilized. The dependence of criticality on parameters characterizing the surface heating is exhibited analytically and suggested as an attractive test for the effects (in particular) of friction on combustible materials.
Some qualitative results are also derived for an asymmetrically heated slab where no analytical results can be obtained.
