โœฆ Synopsis

We report the existence of a pressure dependence of the critical velocity of flow of superfluid 4He through a submicron aperture. Combined with the already-known temperature dependence of the critical velocity at very low temperatures, this observation puts further experimental constraints on the mechanism responsible for the nucleation of phase slips in 4He.

We have observed the critical onset of dissipation in the flow of superfluid 4He through a submicron aperture as a function of velocity to have a finite width that increases with temperature. The results suggest a thermal activation barrier of the form &(l-v/vc,,) with Eo of the order of 1.5x10-21 J
