John Turner est un ancien taulard, ancien flic, un temps thérapeute, au passé fait de meurtres et de violence et qui s'est finalement réfugié près d'un lac où il n'aspire qu'à l'oubli. L'endroit semble idéal. A peine installé pourtant, il devient l'adjoint du shérif local et arrête un chauffard qui traversait la ville ivre mort avec 200000 dollars dans son coffre. Au petit matin, alors que personne n'a été prévenu, le prisonnier est " extrait " de sa cellule par un commando qui blesse grièvement deux policiers. John Turner, bien loin de se douter qu'il va libérer les chiens de son passé, part sur la route à la poursuite de cet inconnu désormais en cavale...
