✦ Synopsis

Aluminium-5 wt.% magnesium open cell foam produced by replication and tested in tension at 300, 350 or 450 °C creeps at rates between 10 À3 and 10 À8 s À1 . The behaviour of the foam matches that of the alloy from which it is made: three-power law creep with the same activation energy as for Al-Mg alloy creeping by viscous dislocation glide in the high stress regime and five-power law creep in the low stress regime. A repeating element composed of four cell struts in a pentagonal dodecahedron model is used to analyze the creep-buckling of opencell foams. The solid making up the cell struts is assumed to follow power-law creep. As a result, the theoretical expression for describing the failure time for the onset

A repeating element consisting of four straight and uniform-thickness cell struts in a pentagonal dodecahedron model is employed to analyze theoretically the creep-rupturing of open-cell foams. We show that the replication process can be extended towards the production of functionally graded porous structures by fabricating and testing structures in which outer layers of dense metal encase a central part made of foam with graded porosity. Samples of this kind are produced by pressing indiv

The mechanical properties of high-purity aluminum foams produced by replication from salt precursors are measured in compression. These foams have homogeneous open-porosity, cell sizes equivalent to the particle size of the precursor salt (ෂ500 µm in this case) and relative densities near 25%. Defor
