## Abstract The failure of a 321 stainless steel flange due to the presence of sigma phase was used to check etching procedures for sigma phase in 321 SS as well as to establish the timeβtemperature diagram for sigma phase in this material.

β¦ Synopsis
7he nucleation and growth of intergranular cavities during the creep of type 321 stainless steel were investigated. ('reel) samples were solution heat treated at lll2Β°C for 7.2 ks and then subjected to a stabilization treatment of 288 ks at 910Β°C. A clean microstructure was obtained with only a few coarse prima O, precipitates. I'bur samples were then deformed in creep at 49.6 MPa and 812Β°C for 83.5, 135, 163 and 238 ks. After a careful sample preparation procedure, a large number of cavities were measured in each sample. The cavi~ size distributions in the samples were obtained. The rate of nucleation of cavities was found to be approximately proportional to time in the interval studied. The cavity growth rate as a function of the cavity size was calculated using the cavity size distributions and wets compared with theoretical models.
