FOR several years the Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a survey of typical crude oils from the producing fields of the United States. Results of these surveys have been published as Reports of Investigations. More recently, the Bureau has studied properties of crude oils from countries other than

✦ Synopsis
A cesium cell is built for optical absorption measurements in the dense vapor phase. The cesium layer, 10 ~m thick and heated up to 1500°C, is created in a niobium tube between the ends of two long sapphire rods. The whole is pressurized with purified argon up to 110 bar, in a high-pressure vessel with optical windows. A very high efficiency thermal insulation prevents anomalous heating of the high-pressure vessel walls. Typical measurements results are presented and a further use of this cell is suggested.
