By using the expressions of Hartranft and Sih for the stress field at the tip front of an arbitrary crack. the problem of crack propagation under combined stresses in a three-dimensional medium has been discussed on the basis of ((T")~,,, theory and its modification, (tm )m.,r theory. General results have been obtained, calculations carried out for some special cases, and a comparison made with experimental data available in literature.
