✦ Synopsis
Abstract
Single nanopores can be fabricated using a combination of focused‐ion‐beam drilling and local ion‐beam‐assisted oxide deposition. On p. 427, Letant and co‐workers show how a silicon oxide ring can be grown around a single nanopore and how it can be functionalized with single‐stranded DNA using thiol‐terminated linkers. Current–voltage measurements demonstrate the presence of DNA on the pore wall and the open nature of the pore. Future applications include specific detection of whole organisms, ranging in size from bacteria to viruses.
